Building of laboratory is an art and it doesn’t constrain to buildings and instruments. Seeding of right laboratory practices and creating motivating atmosphere is
the real building of laboratory.
Yes, we do a lot of bacterial and other cell culture in lab and in parallel, we are deep rooted on our culture and traditions. But on the other hand, lab culture is most important. We are ardent in establishing the right culture in the lab practices without any relaxations.
Group meetings: Symbiosis is the basis of the lab culture. Group meeting is rather than presenting, it is sharing of knowledge. We have started the lab meeting from March 2020 and its continues. We have our group meeting every Thursday morning (8:30 – 9:30 AM). Our group meetings has two sessions and the details are given below:
Session - I (40 minutes): (Any one of the following two sessions)

-
Journal Club (Presentation and discussion on a recently published article) or
-
Work Presentation (Presentation of data generated by the presenter)

Session - II (20 minutes): (Any one of the following three sessions)

-
History of Science (Classic publications*/ Biography of Scientists/ History of discovery or invention/ Timeline of development of a concept)
-
Fundamentals (Presentation on any basic concept in biology and related sciences)
-
Techniques & Instrumentation* (Presentation on the history, principles and maintenance of instruments or techniques being used in lab)
* Based on inspiration from Prof. Pradeep’s group meeting (IIT Madras)
At the end of these sessions, current news like new awards, grants, instrumental maintanence and other issues in lab will be discussed

Responsibility: The lab is the temple for the researchers. All the lab members are encouraged to take care of the lab including cleanliness. The first job on every day is to clean their work benches and the instruments. Periodical cleaning of the whole lab will be performed largely with the involvement of lab members itself. Even, we ourself takes care of cleaning and maintenance of animal cages in our Animal House. We believe that besides performing research, these activities will lead to understanding the duties and responsibilities in the lab and society. The government has paying us huge money with the hope in us rather than feeding the poor child so we have greater responsibility than other members of society.
Lab notebooks: Special lab note book with ruled pages are provided to the lab members. They are instructed to maintain the lab note books and we encourage the students to mention the date/ period of the experiment, while presenting the data. The lab note will include standardization of protocols, results and day-to-day thoughts and discussions. We are planning for specially designed note books with page numbers and additional features.
Periodical reviews: We will have quaterly reports on the work progress and periodical reviews of the data generated and discussion with collaborators and physicians to get their insights.
Socio-Scientific Responsibility: The lab members are being encouraged to write articles about their work in English and local language, participation in group discussion and meeting with school and college students and involvement in the health camps organized by KMCH Research Foundation. The lab members are encouraged to contribute articles to the blog page in this website. We largely believe that these activities will help them to evolve as good citizens.
